Commissions

Sam Charles Art specialises in the commissioning of animal art. Many portraits and pieces of art have been produced over the years, most notably a 7’ x 7’ painting for a renown Hollywood resident of their goldendoodle, as well as a Siamese cat belonging to an illustrious actress residing in the same neighbourhood.

The process is immersive and involving, the heart leading the head, and the client being involved throughout.

The first step is speaking with the client about the subject, addressing the emotive aspect, where the artwork will be hung in their home, and going through a colour palette to match and perfectly suit the subject.

The creative process then starts with the production of sketches and anatomical notes in situ, as well as taking further reference images for use in the studio.

The client will be given these preparatory studies as part of the process, the main one being a small study of the subject created in oils as a proof - this is delivered before creation starts on the larger piece and is to help the client envisage composition and colours on a smaller scale.

The main piece consists of 5 stages, each one as important as the other:

Stage 1 is sketching the outline and anatomical features, as it is this precision and attention to detail that the finished piece is ultimately built upon.

Stage 2 is a wash to seal the canvas, followed by Stage 3 to ascertain basic colours and shapes.

Stage 4 builds upon the third, through a process of deepening colours and shapes, developing the sense of movement and depth.

The final stage is where the energy imparted into the creative process reaches a crescendo and in every aspect the artwork becomes amplified - accents of lights and darks enhanced, shape and energy sharpened; energy flowing with abundance.

20 years of self-taught artistic experience has formulated a style of painting that uniquely portrays anatomy and energy flow in a synergistic and aesthetically attractive manner.

Every client will have bespoke and exacting needs, so further considerations can be suggested to enhance the creative experience - where will the painting hang, will it match the home decor, should it be framed, should the background colour accentuate or complement the subject’s colouring?
